A Vicious Circle

A few days ago, someone here posted a link to a story about skyrocketing farmland prices in the Midwest. It really made me angry to think about the inflationary chain reaction and the vicious chain of events our politicians have set into motion with these ethanol mandates. It made me even angrier to think that the few who benefit from these policies defend their right to siphon money from the rest of us and into their pockets. (I will be the first to say that surging energy prices are a big component of surging inflation, but with the ethanol mandates we are throwing jet fuel on an already raging fire).
This all started out innocently enough. Oil prices were climbing. Our energy production was shifting to an ever greater extent to countries that are hostile to the U.S.
So, Step 1 in the chain is to propose a solution:
1. The government should subsidize ethanol production to encourage production of home-grown fuels, which will enhance energy security and create jobs in the Midwest.

Should We Ever Subsidize an Oil Company?
“Of course not!” might be the immediate reaction of most people. But doesn’t it depend on the objectives you are trying to achieve or the behaviors you wish to influence? Are there no cases in which it would be warranted? What if the end result was a reduction in our fossil fuel consumption?
I think most people would like to see us move away from fossil fuels. But fossil fuels are money-makers for the oil companies, and the cheapest option (strictly in terms of dollars at the pump) for consumers. So how do we wean off of fossil fuels?

Canada gas exports to U.S. could plunge
Canadian natural gas exports to the United States could post the largest drop in a generation in 2007, an analyst says, as exploration cuts reduce supply and home-grown demand to fuel oil sands output booms.
Martin King, who follows energy commodities at FirstEnergy Capital, a Calgary investment bank, expects exports to fall by up to a billion cubic feet a day next year, down about 10 percent from current shipments around 10 billion cubic feet a day.
"The supply picture is looking rather negative," King said. "You have to go back to 1984 to see a (similar) downward trend."
King speculated the cut in exportable gas will come on both the supply and demand side.

A much better and more expansive list of policy recommendations can also be found at "Energize America" platform put together by the good folks at Daily Kos. But rather than debate all these specific proposals I thought I might start defining the key overarching principles that should guide policy makers in drafting legislation aimed at decreasing oil dependence and carbon emissions.
The first principle is "End All Subsidies of Fossil Fuels".
Subsidies for Oil and Gas Continue

The best first move in reducing our dependence on oil would be to reduce all the subsidies for using oil and gas. This is just common sense fiscal responsibility and helps achieve a stated public policy goal. In NY state, these subsidies amount to over $1 billion dollars.
